Evil Queen Mural at WDW

The Evil Queen, the Huntsman and the crow survey the scene from their mural above the exit of Snow White's Scary Adventures ride at Walt Disney World, 2009.

Seven Dwarfs Embroidered Windbreaker

The Seven Dwarfs show up on this windbreaker jacket which probably dates from 1994, as indicated by both the style of font and the word "Masterpiece". This lettering was employed between the late 1980s and mid-90s as the promotional logo for the film. Yet, the word "masterpiece" only started with the release of Snow White in the Disney "Masterpiece" VHS home video collection back in October of 1994.

Anna Kipling "50th Anniversary" Record

In 1987, UK record label MBS Music released a single to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Snow White. Catalog no. MBS 002. The songs were performed by actress/singer Anna Kipling who appears on the album cover. The artwork also includes an illustration of Snow White and the dwarfs, plus the 50th anniversary logo on the back. However, the two Madonna-esque eighties-sounding songs--Happy Anniversary and Where Do You Go--don't have anything to do with Snow White.

A promotional card to win a trip to Walt Disney World was included inside. The contest ended August 7th 1987.

The video below is not the highest quality, but it offers a glimpse of the ceremony where such names were present as Roy E. Disney, Ward Kimball, Richard Frank and Adriana Caselotti. Even Snow White herself steps up to the podium to speak.

1938 Snow White Movie Tickets

A rare find: two unused numbered tickets, one adult and one student, from a Wednesday matinee showing of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Dated April 27th, 1938, these were for a showing just 4 months after the movie premiered at the Carthay Circle Theatre on December 21. 1937.

The adult ticket is for a center orchestra seat and cost $1.10. The student went for .55 cents. Each is from the Whittier Theater in Whittier, California. They measure 3.5" x 1.5" and are single sided. Made of heavy card stock. Printed by the Globe Ticket Co., LA.

Snow White Collector Note: These tickets above sold on ebay for $200 (US).

_____________

[UPDATE: October 2012]

Here's an adult matinee ticket from the same day as those above. This one only cost 55¢, maybe because it was "orchestra left" rather than "center".

Snow White's Ride Destruction

It was during the 1982-83 renovation of Fantasyland at Disneyland Resort that the photos below were taken. The demolition was in progress and the original 1955 Snow White's Scary Adventures ride facade as it faced it's last days.

Thanks to blogger Disneyland Nomenclature for posting these in his Destruction series.

Seven Dwarfs or Dwarves?

1994 "5 Dwarfs" Serigraph Cel - Limited Edition 7500.

In a recent post on the Snow White fanpop site, a reader asked the following question, and contributor IsisRain offered this response...

Q: If the plural for dwarf is dwarves, then why is the fairytale called Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs?

A: Dwarfs was actually the original plural for dwarf. It's one of those irregular plurals like roofs.

J. R. R. Tolkien popularized dwarves. He intended the changed spelling to differentiate the "dwarf" fantasy race in his novels from the cuter and simpler beings common in fairy tales, but his usage has since spread.

Multiple astronomical dwarf stars and multiple non-mythological short human beings, however, remain dwarfs.

Snow White in Apples

Food artist Prudence Staite used 14 different varieties of apples to make these scenes to commemorate the recent Blu-ray release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. "It was fantastic to play around with such well-known, iconic imagery. The apple is such a big part of the story, it seemed right to use it to recreate some of the Disney magic in the works."

Snow White Audio - Free Download

Candlelight Stories has made available a free MP3 download of their audio production of the Grimm Brother's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: https://www.candlelightstories.com/2010/03/03/audio-story-snow-white-and-the-seven-dwarfs-2/

Black-n-white illustration by Walter Crane (1886)
In this full 30-minute production you will hear a cast of characters, completely original orchestral music, songs, and fantastic sound effects. We tell the story in a way that is unlike any you have heard before.Candlelight Stories

This production is really quite good with its own unique twists. Fine voice work and original songs add a fresh spin on the classic tale. The voicing of the Evil Queen is majestic, the magic mirror sings, and the dwarfs even have their own original mining song. You can listen to the entire Snow White tale here.

Lotte Reiniger - Queen of the Silhouette

Fourteen years before Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was premiered as the world's first feature-length animated film, work had begun on another "world's first" animated feature. It was 1923. Lotte Reiniger, a young German filmmaker, set out to create The Adventures of Prince Achmed, a film based on "The One Thousand and One Nights." However, rather than hand-drawing every frame of her characters, she cut-out silhouette paper puppets with movable joints.

Reiniger worked for three years on the film with her husband Carl Koch as well as animator Bertold and background artist Walter Rutman. "The paper cutouts were jointed using wires and delicately arranged on top of a lightbox, where it was photographed frame by frame." Source: ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Archive

The film was finished in 1926 and featured a complete symphonic score by Wolfgang Zeller.

It was released in 2002 to DVD which also includes Lotte Reiniger: Homage to the Inventor of the Silhouette Film, a 60-minute documentary by Katja Raganelli.

In 2008, Lotte Reiniger, The Fairy Tale Films was released on PAL DVD in the UK and includes such classics as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and The Frog Prince.
