We wrap up our look at the 70th anniversary commemorative items with this open edition Snow White and Dopey figurine. Entitled A Sweet Send Off, it was introduced by the Walt Disney Classics Collection in July 2007. Sculpted by artist Kent Melton, the figure stands 6.375" tall. Along with the usual bottom impressions, (the first year production mark was Captain Hook's hook), the piece also bears a 70th anniversary stamp. Original retail price $199 (USD).

Gold Coin Set (70th Anniversary - 2007)

This commemorative 24kt gold coin overlay set consists of 9 pieces--Snow White, all Seven Dwarfs, and a 70th anniversary logo. Individually numbered on the side of each coin, the collection is limited to 1937. The backs read: "Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 70th Anniversary December 21, 1937 © Disney." They measure approximately 1.5" in diameter.

Housed in a handsome wooden box (7.625" x 7.25") with a see-thru window, each coin is encased in it's own protective plastic covering. Certificate of Authenticity included. Original retail price $175 (USD).

Cast Member Trinket Box (70th Anniversary - 2007)

Created in 2007 exclusively for Disney cast, crew and imagineers, this Snow White 70th Anniversary trinket/jewelry box is made of antiqued fine porcelain. The covered dish displays artwork on nearly every surface. Measures approximately 5" across and 1.5" tall.

The six side panels all contain illustrations. Pictured below are Snow White and the Prince on one and the Seven Dwarfs on another. Not shown is panel three with Snow kissing Dopey's head, panel four with the Evil Queen, panel five presents half the Dwarfs holding pickaxes, and panel six with the remaining three Dwarfs heading home from work, Doc in lead.

The inside lid reads, "Celebrating 70 Years of magic with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."

The dish interior features Snow White at the Wishing Well and with a bird in her hand. The text says, "Disney Family Holiday Celebration" and "Because of you, dreams come true."

On the bottom is signed "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" with a heart on either side. Also "©Disney Made in Thailand."

Bradford Editions Figurine Collection (70th Anniversary - 2007)

This 2007 porcelain collection of 70th anniversary figurines designed by The Bradford Editions featured Snow White and the Dwarfs in their "Silly Song" scene. The pieces were released at intervals, the first included both Happy and Dopey. Snow White came next followed by the rest of the dwarfs, each in a separate issue.

The Snow White figurine stands 7" tall (17.8 cm) and plays the "Heigh-Ho" song. Her skirt features artwork from the movie and the rest of her is accented with 22K gold and Swarovski crystals. Hand-painted. Certificates of Authenticity included.

Also from The Bradford Editions in 2007 was this Evil Queen figurine, the premiere issue in the Disney's Divas of Darkness Collection. The piece measures approximately 6" high (15.2 cm) and was limited to 95 casting days. Artwork on the cape depicts the Witch offering the poison apple to Snow with castle in background. Accents include a sparkling simulated ruby pendant and 22K-gold crown. COA included.

Snow White's 70th was well represented in the pin department. These two spinners, of Snow and the Dwarfs, are both limited editions of 1000 and were released during at the November 16th DCA event. Original retail price $12.95 (USD) each.

Another limited edition item available for purchase at the DCA 70th Anniversary event was a Snow White watch. The original edition size was listed on the website as totaling 70. However, it appears that it may have ended up being limited to just 25 time pieces. Retail price $250.

Replica Souvenir Program (70th Anniversary - 2007)

Guests who attended the 70th anniversary event at DCA were given a Commemorative Keepsake Voucher at the start of the day. At the conclusion, if they still had the voucher in hand, they could exchange it for this exact reproduction of the program that was originally distributed at the 1937 Carthay Circle premiere of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The replica souvenir came in a protective envelop with the 70th Anniversary logo on the face side...

This life-size engraved glass apple with the 70th Anniversary logo was the free gift handed out at the start of the day to attendees of the Snow White 2007 DCA event.

Glass worker David Bird was there as a guest artist during the celebration. He shares that the apple was also given to all the participating artists at the end of the evening.

On November 16, 2007, a special commemorative event was held at Disney's California Adventure Park in honor of the 70th Anniversary of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The Event Packages...

Guests could sign up for one of two itineraries for the 70th anniversary event. The first was the $25 Magic Mirror deal which bought you admission to DCA at 5:00 pm. You'd get a commemorative gift and have time to shop for other anniversary merchandise. This was followed by a special introduction to and screening of the film.

The more attractive package was the $150 Poisoned Apple program. It included the above but with admission to the park at the earlier time of 2:00 pm. Guests would have the first look at the limited edition merchandise plus have the opportunity to get their pieces signed by the artists on hand. This was followed at 5:00 pm with food and a drink at the Snow White Soiree. A panel discussion at 6:00 pm would include Roy E. Disney, John Lasseter and others. Next came a preview tour of "The Fairest One of All" art exhibit in the Animation Building, before being led to reserved seating at the Hyperion Theater for the film screening.

The Merchandise...

The event store was set up in the Stage 12 building where there was no shortage of commemorative 70th Anniversary merch to be had. Well...actually...most items were limited editions so a Random Selection Process was used to insure the fair distribution to attendees. Some of the collectibles were simple keepsakes such as this magnet and keychain displaying the anniversary logo.

Artist Signings...

In additional to the 70th anniversary merchandise, attendees also had the opportunity to purchase and have personally signed original art and prints from such Disney artists as Robert Olszewski, Toby Bluth, Yakovetic, Elisabete Gomes, David Bird, and Dave Avanzino.

The Snow White Soiree...

The Poison Apple itinerary continued onto Stage 17 where servers came 'round with trays of food items, seven different hors d'ouevres in all, one for each of the dwarfs, plus drinks and dessert too. The servings were bite-sized but the portions kept coming so everyone got their fill. This was scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm, but things got started a little late.

And next to the stage, artist Noah was creating a painting of the Evil Queen. On the right of the canvas was the Magic Mirror which, when seen under black light, revealed the image of Snow White.

Panel Discussion...

Traffic problems for some of the special guests caused another delay, but once they'd all arrived, the Soiree was followed by a lively panel discussion moderated by producer Don Hahn (Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Waking Sleeping Beauty). The panelists included Roy E. Disney, Marge Champion, Glen Keane, John Lasseter, Leonard Maltin, and Lella Smith (Creative Director of the Animation Research Library). Each person was escorted to the stage by one of the Dwarfs.

In the audience were both Alice Davis and Kim Justice, wives to Disney Legends Marc Davis and Bill Justice.

At the conclusion of the panel discussion, a Disney cast member sang "Someday My Prince Will Come" while Snow White and the Prince did their dance on stage. Cindy from Cindy's Disneyland Resort Page shot this hand-held video of the performance.

The Art Exhibit...

Attendees who purchased the Poison Apple package were next invited over to the Animation Building for a first look at the "Fairest One of All" exhibit. Out in front was a miniature version of the Dwarfs' cottage which would serve as a backdrop for Snow White photo opportunities throughout the run of the exhibition.

It's interesting to note that this same cottage background was brought out at DCA again in October of 2009 in celebration of the Diamond Edition Blu-ray release of the film.

Inside the Animation Building, a collection of more than 100 pieces of original animation art was on display within the main room and still more stunning images ran on the overhead screens. Curated by Lella Smith, the exhibit featured storyboards, concept art, layouts, and backgrounds from the film. Guests also had a chance to view cels but due to the delicate nature of the originals, those on display were reproductions.

The Screening...

For the finale to the day, guests headed over to the Hyperion Theater for the screening of the film. Apparently, there was a bit of a mix up and not nearly enough reserved seating was set aside for those who had purchased the Poison Apple package. Yet, everyone got a seat, and soon John Lasseter marched out on stage along with Snow White, the Prince, and the Dwarfs. As he introduced the film, several of the Dwarfs did funny antics behind him.

At the conclusion to the evening (and for those who managed to hang onto their Commemorative Keepsake Voucher), guests were handed a large envelope. Inside was a beautiful replica program from the 1937 Carthay Circle Theatre premiere. We'll have a look at it in an upcoming post.

For the Snow White enthusiast, the event offered plenty to choose from. Limited edition commemorative gifts and merchandise, a chance to meet and talk with Snow White artists, themed food, Marge Champion, Alice Davis and Roy E. Disney all sharing their own Snow White memories, an exhibit of original animation artwork, and a big-screen showing of the film inside a Disney theme park...maybe not a perfect day, but certainly not a bad way to celebrate the 70th year milestone.

WDCC Dopey Figurine (65th Anniversary - 2002)

The Dopey "Bedazzled" sculpt was the second of the Snow White 65th Anniversary figurines to be released in 2002 by the Walt Disney Classics Collection. A numbered limited edition of 7,500, the piece was only available during the Fall Sculpture Event on September 27-29 of that year. Created by artist Chris Peterson, Dopey holds a Swarovski crystal "diamond" in each hand.

The figure measures 4.25" tall and has the "65th Anniversary" text along with the other usual backstamp inscriptions. The production year mark is the Sombrero from Saludos Amigos. Retail price $99 (USD). COA included. A Dopey pin was the featured gift-with-purchase.

The postcard that was sent to collectors announcing the Fall Premiere Event for the release of the Dopey "Bedazzled" sculpture. Card measures 6" x 4".

WDCC GWP Pins (65th Anniversary - 2002)

Gift-With-Purchase pins were issued for both the Snow White and Dopey 65th Anniversary WDCC figurines. The Snow pin came with the membership package to the Walt Disney Collector Society. It featured the Society's logo with the princess kneeling beside it and holding a bluebird.

The pin (and figurine) were issued for the year 2002, even though the back reads," Produced exclusively for 2001 Walt Disney Collectors Society Members © Disney."

At this time, Disney had begun using rubber backs on their pins rather than the older metal clasps. However, the mouse ear backs that are used today had not yet become popular.

A similar Snow White pin was issued in 2003 without the WDCS logo. It was part of an 11-pin framed set celebrating the first decade of the Walt Disney Collectors Society membership figurines. The framed collection was limited to 1500, though the back of each pin was stamped, "Disney, Walt Disney Collectors Society, Limited Edition 2,003 China."

The WDCC 2002 Fall Event Sculpture featured a 65th Anniversary Dopey with diamonds. This pin was free with the purchase of the "Bedazzled' figurine. The backside reads "Walt Disney Classics Collection". Measures 1.5" tall.

WDCC Collectors Society 'Snow White' Figurine (65th Anniversary - 2002)

"Won't You Smile For Me?" was the gift sculpture for members who joined or renewed with the Walt Disney Collectors Society in 2002. This Snow White figurine (the only WDCC sculpt that I currently own myself) was created by artist Dusty Horner who found inspiration in an original animation sketch from the film. A fine art print of this drawing was sent out to collectors upon processing their memberships.

Kneeling, the princess holds a bluebird in her palms. The porcelain piece stands 4.75" tall. In addition to the regular bottom-stamp markings, the base also reads, "65th Anniversary". Released in January, the edition closed twelve months later in December. Retail: $50 (USD). Made in Thailand.

Swarovski Snow White Brooch (65th Anniversary - 2002)

This Snow White 65th anniversary pin-back brooch was produced by Swarovski for the Walt Disney Galley (Art of Disney). The elegant figure is cast in gold enamel with blue, black and red enamel accents, and it's adorned with red and white Swarovski crystals. A limited edition of 1937 (to commemorate the year of the film's premiere release), the original retail price back in 2002 was $135.00 (USD). The piece measures approximately 2.5" in height x 3.75" across. A Certificate of Authenticity was included.

Markrita Collector's Box and Pin (65th Anniversary - 2002)

In 2002, the Walt Disney Gallery presented this exclusive Markrita collector's box in honor of Snow White's 65th. The figurine captures the iconic scene of Snow singing "Some Day My Prince Will Come." Sculpted by artists Mark and Rita Dornan, the piece is cast in resin and features a hidden compartment with a special wearable poisoned apple pin (also made of resin).

The figural box measures approximately 6.75" x 5.25" (17 x 13cm); Pin is about 1.25" (3cm) wide.

Where will you be in five years? This Markrita sculpture sure knew. Bradford Exchange 3D Plate Series (65th Anniversary - 2002)

This unique six-plate collection from the Bradford Exchange was created especially for the film's 65th anniversary. Each piece features a hand-cast, 3-D porcelain sculpt of Snow White around the outside rim of a plastic plate. Firings were limited to 295 days per issue. The plate (without the sculpt) measures 6.5" across. As with all Bradford items, a Certificate of Authenticity was included.

In addition to producing a series of 3D Snow White plates to commemorate the 65th year of the film, the Bradford Exchange also added to it's "Disney Anniversary Collection" of rectangular ceramic plates. This installment measures 7.75" x 5.25" and had a maximum of 95 firing days.

The back reads, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' 65th Anniversary (1937-2002), Second issue in The Disney Anniversary Collection."

The series started in 2000 with Cinderella's 50th.

Doc and Dopey Figural Box (65th Anniversary - 2002)

Released in association with the Disney Galleries, this 2002 Harmony Kingdom "Doc and Dopey" sculpt was created by artist Patrick Romandy-Simmons. The figural box depicts the washing up scene. Hidden inside is a tiny bar of soap with bubbles. The piece is hand-painted and made from crushed marble and resin. Approximately 3" tall. Limited edition of 3000. Retail price $55 (USD).

The bottom reads "Doc and Dopey, Limited Edition 3000," plus there's a "Snow White" stamp, one for "Harmony Kingdom...Disney 2002," and a "65th Anniversary" logo. The shipping box also had a typed sticker that read "65th" and "Limited Edition".

The figure was sold in the usual Disney locations and also appeared in the Spring 2003 Disney Catalog (pg.73). Item #25914-S23.

Snow White Pins (65th Anniversary - 2002)

This 2002 seven-pin set celebrates the 65th anniversary with the depiction of Gustaf Tenggren's Dwarfs-marching-home scene. The pins are arranged on a background card illustrated with the log and trees from the film. The set is a limited edition of 1937 from the year of the movie's premiere.

Disney Auctions offered an exclusive 65th anniversary pin that year. Featuring Snow and her animal friends, it measures about 2.5" in both height and width. Enesco Snow White Set (65th Anniversary - 2002)

Commemorating the 65th Anniversary of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Enesco issued a collection of eight figurines cast in resin. Each stands upon a "wood grain" base plate.

The Bradford Exchange produced their own series of five ceramic Snow White plates in 1997. While the pieces themselves don't mention the 60th anniversary of the film, they were sold in this year. Each plate is hand-numbered and limited to 95 firing days. Rectangular in shape, they measure 6.25" x 8.5" tall. Original retail price $59.95 (USD). Sold separately. This 60th Anniversary poster was a Gift-With-Purchase item given out by select dealers to customers who purchased the Bring Back Her Heart figurine. It was available free but for one day only.

The heading asks "Who Now is the Fairest One of All?" Lower text reads "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 60th Anniversary." Printed on heavy stock, the poster measures approximately 24" x 18".

Most of these posters display in the lower left corner the 1997 Music Stand production mark encircled by the text, "Exclusive Commemorative Poster." In the bottom right is the WDCC logo. The example to the left, however, is atypical since it does not have either marking.

WDCC Evil Queen Figurine (60th Anniversary - 1997)

"Bring Back Her Heart..." was the 1997 Spring Event Sculpture from the Walt Disney Classics Collection. Released in February of that year, the edition was closed just a few months later in June. Another dynamic porcelain figure by artist Kent Melton, the Evil Queen stands 9" tall and holds the heart box in her hands. Retail price $150 (USD).

"Snow White 60th Anniversary" is printed on the bottom along with the other usual markings. The earliest production stamp is the 1996 Donald Duck Sailor's Hat. Later pieces bare the '97 Mickey Mouse Music Stand from The Band Concert.

According to information posted on Pin Pics, the Walt Disney Classics Collection offered these three 60th Anniversary pins as a gift-with-purchase to customers who bought a WDCC Snow White figurine.

All three pins are back-stamped "Walt Disney Classics Collection 1997." Also included is the name of the character, the Disney © symbol, and a number: 42601 for Snow White, 42602 for Dopey and 42603 or Grumpy.

Note the metal pin backs...this was several years before the introduction of the rubber mouse ear backs.

Mattel Collector Dolls (60th Anniversary - 1997)

It was in 1997 that Mattel released the second Barbie in its "Signature Collection" series, a 60th Anniversary Snow White. The vinyl doll came with a bluebird, stand, and Certificate of Authenticity. Original sticker price on box $49.99 (USD).

Released in 1997 exclusively to Disneyland cast members, these two pins commemorate the six-decade milestone for the film. The first shows Snow White with "60th Anniversary" and "1937-1997" printed on the front. Unfortunately, the only image I could locate was this small example from Pin Pics.

The second pin reads "The Queen, 1937-1997, 60th" and features Her Royal Evilness in a classic pose. The back is simply stamped "©Disney."

Evil Queen/Snow White Watches (60th Anniversary - 1997)

Encircled in decorative metal, the face of this Evil Queen wristwatch is clean and uncluttered. Available only to cast members at Disneyland, the timepiece came in a very limited edition of just 200.

The front reads, "The Queen 1937-1997 60th Anniversary" (similar to the cast member pin). The gold hour and minute hands are chaperoned by a poison apple that circles the dial every 60 seconds.

As you might expect, most Snow White watches tend to be designed for little girls with lots of bright colors. But this anniversary piece feels a little different. A limited edition of just 3000, the face features the princess in a classic pose with red "jewels" from the nine to four o'clock positions. The text reads, "Snow White 60th Anniversary."

Inscribed along the rear outer edge is, "Made Exclusively For Walt Disney Theme Parks And Resorts." In the center back it reads, "Limited Edition commemorating 60 years of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 1937." Then the edition number is listed.

Manufactured by Fossil, the watch was sold at the parks in 1997. It came with a black stand that reads "Limited Edition" and a silver apple that sits on top. Inscribed on its front is "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 1937".

Also included was a Certificate Of Verification.

The Disney Store offered a series of four commemorative 3D plates during the Snow White 60th Anniversary. Each was a limited edition of 10,000. Fraser Snow White Cottage (60th Anniversary - 1997)

This "Snow White Cottage" is a 60th Anniversary piece from Ian MacGregor Fraser, the founder of Fraser Creations. A Scottish firm, Fraser was known for its detailed resin cast replicas of famous buildings from around the world. This handmade and painted fairytale miniature was a departure from the majority of "real life" pieces they produced.

To the left front of the cottage is a sign that reads Dwarfs' House, and near the door, Snow White is seen sweeping the walkway. The wooden display base measures 7.5" x 5.75" and bears a metal plate that reads, Snow White 1937-1997.

In 1997, the Disney Catalog produced this one troy ounce of .999 silver medallion featuring Snow White, the Prince, and Dwarfs all in 14K gold. The reverse side shows Snow surrounded by her animal friends. Minted by Liberty Mint, the coin is a limited edition of 1200. Sold in a red leather box. Certificate of Authenticity included.

It's still nearly a year away, but on December 21, 2012, Walt Disney's first feature-length film will be 75 years old! As the months tick off, we might be experiencing a stream of commemorative events, promotions, and collectibles in honor of Miss White. We've already seen the very first items in the special edition wall calendar released back on August 1, 2011. Then there was the It's Off To Sleep We Go baby doll collection made available this past Fall.

If Snow's 75th is anything like her 50th, then Disney will have a number of anniversary events in the works. At least one has already been announced. According to Steven Clark, head of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club...

In the summer, D23 will offer an all-new “Destination D” event, Destination D: 75 Years Of Disney Animation, held over the course of two days at the Disneyland Resort in California (August 11-12). As Disney marks the 75th anniversary of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, D23 marks the occasion by gathering many renowned Disney animation legends along with top Disney animators, voice talent (past and present), and composers—plus interesting demonstrations, fascinating presentations, autograph sessions, and the chance to see entertaining animation rarities from the Disney vaults—all in celebration of 75 years of Disney feature animation. It's also no coincidence that several live-action movies featuring the Snow White character are being released in 2012. The two productions getting the most hype include Mirror, Mirror starring Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen and Lily Collins as Snow White, and Snow White and the Huntsman with Kristen Stewart as the Princess, Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman, and Charlize Theron as the Queen. As we wait to see what all unfolds for this year's Diamond Jubilee, it seems only fitting to continue our examination of the other anniversary commemorations. Not long ago we took a look back at the Golden Anniversary of Snow White. Over this next month we'll do the same for the 60th, 65th and 70th.

We've already had a glimpse of a few collectibles that were produced:

Snow White "Pook-a-Looz"

We'll say goodbye to 2011 with a Pook post...

You may have asked, as I did when I first heard the name, "What the heck is a Pook-a-Looz?" With the tagline, "Too cute for their own good," these flattened, stylized soft fleece collectible toys were released to the general public spring 2010--in conjunction with a good dose of promotional hype.

What the Pooks are, according to lead designer Jose Zamora, are caricatures of classic Disney character personalities. Zamora says he tried to zero in on one unique feature for each. Over 30 classic characters were "pooked" and sold at the Disney Store, Wal-Mart, Toys-R-Us and the other usual chains. Each of the 12" polyester plush dolls retailed for $12.50 (USD).

The buzz was high when they first hit the market. Disney Consumer Products even created a separate Pook website and promoted them on their Facebook page. On youtube, Disney Living put out a series of "Pook-a-Sodes", short videos starring of course the Pook-a-Looz.

The Snow White episode is so ridiculously adorable, that I can't help but like it. Look for the hidden Pook-A-Looz character at about the 25 second mark.

Dopey and Grumpy Pooks.

In addition to the 12" dolls, a variety of other "Pook" products popped up in stores too. Miniature plush versions of Snow White and Grumpy appeared in the form of keychains attached to mouse ears carabiners. Figures approximately 3.5" tall.

This past March, almost one year from when the first Pooks began to appear, I visited Toys-R-Us. There were no signs of them anywhere except in the discount section. The few remaining store stragglers were marked down and priced to sell. It looked as though the Pook craze had died down...but in fact, it had not yet pooped out. New 2011 releases did occur at the theme parks.

So we say "goodpye" to the "pold" year with a peek at some pics of Pook madness! Also see the Pook pin.

Coming Soon! The Carthay Circle to DCA!

The Carthay Circle Theatre in Los Angeles was of course home to the 1937 world premiere of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Built in 1926, the theater's...

...exterior design was in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, with whitewashed concrete trimmed in blue, with a high bell tower and neon sign that could be seen for miles. From the book, Wilshire Boulevard: Grand Concourse of Los Angeles

Sadly, by the late 1960s, the Carthay could no longer compete with the more modern suburban cinemas of the time. The once grand Golden Age movie palace was demolished in 1969 to make way for office buildings.

It was 1994 that Disney theme parks first celebrated this historic icon with the expansion of their Sunset Boulevard at Disney Hollywood Studios in Orlando. A replica of the facade was built to house one of the gift shops along this street.

In 2007, the $1.1 billion expansion plan was announced for Disney California Adventure. Among the many new additions to the park would be a centralized replica of the theater facade. Set as a visual anchor at the end of the entry plaza on Buena Vista Street, the Carthay Circle Theatre would again find a home.

Across the street from the "theatre" is a small building with a matching facade. This is the "pump house" mentioned in the blue prints above. Currently, it's an information booth, but word is that it will also serve as the actual pump house for the plaza fountain...

On December 23rd, the tarps were removed from around the top portion of the theatre tower. On Christmas Eve, even more of the tower was revealed...

The memory of the Carthay Circle Theatre will be forever linked to Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. And while this Golden Age movie palace may be long gone, thanks to theme park imagineers, it won't soon be forgotten.

This guidebook from Stephen Ison's Snow White animation art exhibition is quite nice. Steve's collection was on display at the Indianapolis Museum of Art from December 4, 1994 to February 5, 1995. It proved to be the most successful program in the museum's history. With a wealth of black-and-white images, detailed sidebars, and historical information, this booklet made for a great take-home souvenir for the attendees of the exhibit. Measures 12" x 8".

Stephen Ison's animation art collection is beautifully reproduced in the 1994 Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: An Art in Its Making. The 192-page hardcover features loads of stunning full-color images of the artwork along with an introduction written by Steve and text by Martin Krause and Linda Witkowski.

Krause provides a critically incisive account of making the film, from its inception through its three years in production to its wildly enthusiastic reception by audiences and critics. Witkowski supplies a detailed, fairly technical explanation of the animation process as well as a guide to the preservation and handling of animation art designed to appeal to serious students of the genre. The heart of the volume is a retelling of the famous story scene-by-scene by means of cel reproductions, pencil drawings, and other production art.

Filmic Light: How did the Snow White...An Art in Its Making book come about?

Stephen Ison: It started out to only be a catalogue for the exhibition. I kept pounding on the museum “powers that be” that it needed to be a book. I won...especially after Hyperion Press wanted to publish it.

FL: Did you know authors Martin Krause or Linda Witkowski before the book?

SI: Yes. Linda Witkowski was the person I had known who helped/taught me about conservation and preservation of animation art. She had actually done her college Masters thesis on cel restoration and conservation. Linda introduced me to Marty who helped me convince the IMA that an exhibition of art from Snow White could be successful.

FL: How much were you involved with it?

SI: Pretty much, every aspect, whether they always welcomed it or not.

The opening of the 1994 Indianapolis Museum of Art exhibit featuring Steve's collection was quite an event. Diane Disney Miller attended along with animator greats Ward Kimball (along with his wife Betty), Marc Davis, Joe Grant, Ken O'Connor, Maurice Noble, and Bill Justice. What an opportunity it was for the attendees to meet and chat with these legends...and to get autographs.

The title page from the book below comes from the Phil Sears Collection. It features the signatures of all of the animators mentioned above. In addition, it's signed by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston who could not attend the Indianapolis event due to an illness that Ollie’s wife was suffering from.

In 1995, a "Disney Miniature Edition" was published. Same book, same number of pages, just smaller in size.

While both the original and miniature versions are no longer found via new bookstore channels, they are available from online resellers, often for a decent price. On a side note, it was about a decade ago that I stumbled upon a stack of 15 to 20 brand new shrink-wrapped copies of the full-size original, all dramatically reduced in price at a Barnes and Noble. I couldn't resist...I bought them all.

It was on a trip to Walt Disney World back in 1973 that a young college kid named Stephen Ison saw his first piece of animation art. Decades later, he would become the owner of the largest collection on the planet of original animation art from Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In 1994, Steve's passion would give rise to Snow White...An Art in Its Making, both a museum exhibit and a hardcover book which featured his collection.

In the Fall 1993 issue of Disney News magazine (p. 55-56) an article appeared entitled A Suitor for Snow White or... Memoirs of a Devoted Collector. It was written by and about Steve and his "hobby".

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to correspond with Steve via email. I asked him how he got started collecting, where he acquired his pieces, and what's become of the artwork today. Here's what he had to say...

Filmic Light: Who are you Steve and how did you come to be a collector of animation art?

Stephen Ison: Like most kids growing up in the 50s, I watched The Mickey Mouse Club and was always fascinated by Roy Williams (The Big Mouseketeer) whenever he would draw the various characters on the show. That’s what got me interested in drawing and my earliest exposure to all things Disney. As a kid, I was also bitten by the collector bug...baseball cards, stamps, coins, and other assorted “stuff”. I’ve always been a collector of something. I saw my first piece of animation art in 1973 at Walt Disney World and was shocked that you could actually own a piece of art used in a Disney film! Well, the price of the cel was the same as my monthly car payment...so, as a poor college kid, I had to pass, but that’s what planted the seed. I knew someday, if I ever could afford it, I’d start a collection of Disney animation art. It really was that simple. Many years later...after attending an auction of Disney animation art in New York, I started down a road to what would become more than just a hobby.

FL: How did you find this animation art? And where/who did get it from?

SI: When I first started, I found art in the usual places...auctions, antique toy shows, and Disneyana conventions. Later, I became as interested in meeting and knowing many of the artists who worked on the classic Disney films as collecting myself. That’s what kept me motivated to learn more and acquire (preserve) more vintage pieces. Many of my pieces came from the artists themselves.

FL: Why Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs?

SI: When you have the “collector bug”, you have a tendency to “want it all”, so to speak. Well, animation art began to get popular, that I felt I had to make a compromise. Which film was my favorite in style and quality? Which one was the first? Which one did Walt Disney put his heart and soul into? Snow White.

FL: What did the collection consist of, how large, what forms of art, favorite pieces?

SI: By the time I had been collecting only from Snow White, I believe I had around 700 plus pieces. Those pieces consisted of master backgrounds, concept art, cels, drawings, studio notes, character models, and various other items associated with the film. My favorite piece...that’s a hard one...guess it would have to be a panorama master watercolor background of the exterior of the Dwarfs cottage by Sam Armstrong. The Disney Art program ended up creating a limited edition of the piece.

FL: Since most drawings, paintings and cels from Snow White were not signed, did you know who the actual artists were for your pieces?

SI: I was always able to identify most of the drawings, concept art, and backgrounds since I got to know most of the artists who were still around while I was seriously collecting. I don’t think any of them are around anymore. It was an honor and a privilege to know many of them and be able to call them “friend”. I’d have to say one of my best friends in world was Maurice Noble; a background painter on Snow White, who later worked at Warner Brothers with Chuck Jones on hundreds of the classic shorts in the late 40s and 50s. He was one of the most talented and creative people I’ve ever know. He taught me about the classic animation process. I miss him.

FL: How did you house your collection and where is it today?

SI: As my collection grew, I had to learn how to preserve the art. I consulted with the Indianapolis Museum of Art about preservation and conservation, and designed a home gallery that was built to actual museum specs...and, OK...I understand this is a bit much...but, it was designed to look like the interior of the Dwarfs cottage! Yeah, I know... I actually did this three times over a 20 plus year time span, but finally decided my Snow White days should/would come to an end when I retired and built a home in the mountains of North Carolina...not a location conducive to “home galleries”. That was about the time I was approached by Disney Feature Films to see if I’d be interested in letting Snow White come back home to where she started. Today, my collection is under the watchful and protective eye of The Disney Animation Research Library in Los Angeles. A decision I’ve never regretted.

FL: Has your "hobby" of collecting Snow White cels opened doors for you? That is, have you met many other SW collectors? Other people associated with the making of the film or other later Disney personalities? Any anecdotal stories you'd like to share?

SI: Yes, many wonderful doors have opened, as a result of collecting from Snow White...exhibitions throughout the world, books, lectures, lifetime friendships... One of my favorite memories is the night I received a phone call from a woman who said her name was Diane Disney Miller, that she had read the forward of my Snow White book and it made her cry. She then asked if she could come to my exhibit at the Indianapolis Museum of Art...that person, of course, was Walt Disney’s daughter, Diane. She has always been so supportive. What an honor. That was the ultimate for me at the time. Recently, Diane asked me to curate an exhibit of Snow White animation art for the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco. A must see. An amazing facility and tribute to her father. It opens December 2012 in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the release of Snow White. We’re pulling Snow White art from every source I’ve ever known for the last 25 years. It will be an extensive exhibit.

FL: Have you seen other Snow White collections? When you're with other similar collectors, what's the conversation like?

SI: As far as I know, there are, nor ever were, any serious collectors of “Snow White only” animation art. Most of the high-end collectors had art from all of the classic Disney films. That was always tough for me, and at times, took a lot of discipline for me not to do the same. I really loved it all.

FL: Are you collecting today?

SI: Well, once bitten, as they say. Yes, I’m still picking up choice pieces, but not just from one film. I especially enjoy concept art from Fantasia. Some of those pieces are amazing and are truly works of art.

FL: How did the An Art in Its Making exhibit come about at the Indianapolis Museum of Art?

SI: It took me about four years to convince the Indianapolis Museum of Art to sponsor an exhibit of art from Snow White. Many people at the museum didn’t consider it art. In the end, it broke all attendance records for the museum’s 150 year history! Take that nay sayers!

FL: Was it your entire Snow White collection?

SI: Yes. However, after the exhibition, my collection almost tripled in size over the next 12 years.

FL: Did you attend the opening?

SI: Yes. We also flew out several of the original artists who worked on Snow White...Joe Grant, Marc Davis, Ken O’Connor, Ward Kimball, Betty Kimball, Maurice Noble, and Bill Justice. Great weekend. People lined up for hours to meet them and have books signed.

FL: Finally, any special memory or anecdote from the event?

SI: To see these people honored in this way was one of the most satisfying events I’ve ever witnessed. And, to see so many people respond to these wonderful pieces of art was the true pay off of years of collecting. Also, personally touring groups of young school children and watching them react as they learned and asked “real” questions.

Adriana Caselotti Snow White Clock

This Snow White clock comes from Brian Sibley who received it as a gift from Adriana Caselotti back in 1988, the year following the release of his Making of the Classic Film book. The clock is inscribed to Brian, and during a recent correspondence, he shared this anecdote about Adriana and her generous spirit...

As you know from the photo I sent you (and the fact that I own a clock) all friends (and a lot of acquaintances) were given such things. She kept a stock of clocks which were dismantled and signed on the face and put back together during your visit! And she SOLD sets of photos via her own primitive mail order service. She may have made a few dollars from fans who just wrote to her but I never had to buy any, and to best of my knowledge, anyone she got to know more than casually were given the 'full set' all signed. Certainly over the years she sent or gave me many versions as well as signing them for friends of mine, and on one occasion, my Mum! :)

WDCC Snow White Holiday Princess, 2005

It's a Merry Christmas with "The Gift of Friendship" figurine. Introduced in July of 2005, this open edition Snow White piece was the third release of four in the Walt Disney Classics Collection Holiday Princess series. Sculpted by Dusty Horner, the porcelain figure stands 7.5" tall

The colors for this figure were inspired by those found on one of the film's first posters. In addition, the border design of Snow White's cloak is patterned after the clothing worn by her mother in an early Little Golden Book.

Boxed Set of Figural Tree Ornaments

Manufactured by Doubl-glo, this vintage collection of Christmas ornaments was the very first Snow White set ever produced. It came in a handsomely illustrated box (12" x 9.5" x 2" deep) with the "1938 Walt Disney Enterprises" copyright information printed on the lower edge of the lid.

The 8-piece painted, blown glass set with attached metal caps and wire hanger loops includes Snow White and the Dwarfs, each 3.5" tall.

The box lid is perforated to allow a die-cut display look...

Makes for a nice feature when opened. Possibly displayed in stores this way...

As far as ornaments go, this Walt Disney Classics Collection "Sweet Surprise" is one of the coolest I've seen. Housed within the porcelain apple, the scene is of Snow White after she has awakened and met the dwarfs for the first time.

A members-only piece exclusive to the Walt Disney Collectors Society, the ornament was available at the start of January 2009 and was acquired with a redemption certificate that came in the Society's membership kits. The bottom production year mark (the 2008 Sleeping Beauty's crown) is a decal rather than an incised imprint due to the thinness of the base. Stem is made of pewter. Sculpture size: 3.25". Original price: $35 (USD). Retired.

The Snow White's Castle ornament was released in June 2000 as part of the "Enchanted Places" series, the fourth castle in a collection of six. Designed by concept artist Larry Nikolai, it too only stands 3.25" tall, yet it has "numerous tiny details such as the sweeping staircase, beautiful castle gate and an elegant front door."

74th Anniversary of Disney's Snow White!

Today marks the second anniversary of this Filmic Light blog...and more importantly, the 74th year since Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs made its world premiere at the Carthay Circle Theatre in Los Angeles.

A 1937 RKO advertisement in Box Office--a trade magazine for the movie theater industry--announced the premiere with a pitch to theater owners. The distribution company was "now ready to discuss forms for extended run engagements" for the film.

After the premiere, Snow White continued to play twice daily at the Carthay Circle. This full-page ad appeared in the December 25, 1937 issue of Box Office...

These pages appeared in the January 1, 1938 issue of Box Office...

It would be another six weeks after the premiere before RKO was ready with the general North American theatrical release of the film on February 4, 1938. A promotion in an early 1938 issue of Box Office featured glowing reviews from that first screening including a telegram from movie theater executive Charles P. Skouras...

World Premiere of Snow White most successful opening we have ever had at Carthay Circle. Practically every celebrity in Hollywood turned out and paid tribute to Walt Disney's production, with applause lasting long after the end of the picture. Public Interest is equally high with ADVANCE SALE BOTH MATINEES AND NIGHTS TOPPING THAT OF ANY PREVIOUS ROAD SHOW AT CARTHAY CIRCLE.

This 1938 Box Office promotion encouraged theater owners to book The Great Walt Disney Festival of Hits. Along with the Snow White feature were the shorts Ferdinand the Bull, The Practical Pig, The Ugly Duckling, and Donald's Lucky Day.

Two years of blogging about Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs...who would of thunk it? The research has sometimes been consuming, the hours in front of this computer sometimes lengthy. But all well worth it.

I personally have garnered so much more about the film and its tributary manifestations than I ever knew before. I've also had the wonderful fortune of connecting with Snow White authors, artists, collectors, and other fans of the movie. The profound impact that Walt Disney's first feature film has had on the world of animation as well as in the mass consciousness of society is simply phenomenal. And 74 years later, I for one still can't get enough of it.

Walt Disney on Lux Radio, December 20, 1937

Seventy four years ago tonight, Cecil B. DeMille hosted the Lux Radio Theater presentation of the Song of Songs. The program, which starred Marlene Dietrich and Douglas Fairbanks Jr., occurred on the eve of the world premiere of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Just twenty four hours later, both stars would be there at the packed Carthay Circle Theatre, with a host of other Hollywood elite, to see Disney's first feature-length film.

At the conclusion of the radio performance, DeMille welcomed a very young-sounding Walt Disney to the mic. The two chatted about opening night jitters, the making of the animated film, and the obligatory sponsor plug for Lux Flakes.

Vintage Snow White Christmas Lights

Noma produced a number of Christmas light sets. Their Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphonies kits were sold in the States. This Snow White set, however, was only issued in Canada (as were their Pinocchio and Fantasia sets). The shades are simple plastic bells with wraparound decals of each dwarf and Snow. Two identical shades for each character, sixteen shades in total.

This second set of lights, Snow White Mazda Disneylights, was manufactured in England by the British Thomson-Houston Company, Ltd. Dating from the 1940s, the set consists of a UK circuit power cord and sixteen bakelite bell-shaped shades. Again, each has a decal depicting scenes from the film.

Radko Ornament (65th Anniversary - 2002)

This handmade Snow White and Prince ornament, entitled The One I Love, was created by Christopher Radko in 2002 to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the film. The blown glass piece was part of a limited edition of 3000. Measures 5" tall. Original retail price: $38 (USD).

Radko Snow White Ornaments (60th Anniversary - 1997)

The Snow White ornamentation continues. Back in 1997, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the film, artist Christopher Radko designed these unique mouth-blown glass ornaments. The pieces range in size from 9" tall for Snow White to approximately 6-7" for the Dwarfs. A couple of different sets were sold.

This first contained eight pieces, each packed in their own individual black box and then altogether into the larger anniversary box. The individual ornament tags are all dated 1997 on the front. The text inside contains a message from Christopher Radko referring to the 60th anniversary of the film.

A second nine-piece set designed for the Walt Disney Gallery included Snow and the Dwarfs but also a hand-signed poison apple by Christopher Radko. A limited edition of just 500, the ornament collection came in a handsome 60th Anniversary black box with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Four years later in 2001, the ornament set (without the apple) reappeared, this time on the back cover of the Disney Catalog. It was a limited edition of 3000. From 3.5" to 5.25" in size, the pieces were smaller than those above. Retail price: $250.

1987 Snow White "Christmas Greeting" Plate and Ornament

Created for Christmas 1987, this collectors plate and ornament feature artwork "inspired by Walt Disney's Christmas Greeting for 1937" (seen in previous post). The 8" plate was limited to 10,000 and was designed exclusively for the Disneyland and Walt Disney World theme parks. The ornament was a companion piece.

At Disneyland, the plate could be seen hanging on the wall at the Castle Collectible Shoppe in Sleeping Beauty's Castle. Original price was around $29.99 (USD).

1937 Walt Disney Corporate Christmas Card

This original Snow White holiday greeting card was sent out in December of 1937 by the Disney Studio to theater owners and the like.

From the S/R Laboratories Animation Art Conservation Center...

Disney studio Christmas cards have always been special, designed to highlight films from the year of their issue and usually featuring a calendar inside for the coming year.

During the 1975 North American theatrical re-release of the film, a replica of the 1937 card was produced and sent out to theater owners, tucked within the pressbook Ad Pad. Slightly different than the original, it did include the cast portrait illustration by Gustaf Tenggren. Keeping with tradition, a calendar for 1976 was included (on the backside).

Created by artist Joanne Eschrich, the first features Snow White holding a red ribbon, the second has Dopey popping out of a box. Vintage Snow White Ornaments

Officially licensed by Disney, these delicate ornaments are made of paper and glitter. The set includes Snow White (6") and all seven of the dwarfs (5.5"). According to Hake's, dates from the 1950s.

The box is colorfully illustrated and has "Walt Disney Production" printed on it.

The ornament also came filled with a surprise. The heads on each of the dwarfs could be removed, and the round body cavity held candy. Snow White had a cavity in her dress and the candy was accessed from the bottom.

WDCC "Sweet Temptation" Figurine, 2009

Snow appears mesmerized by the poison apple in this WDCC porcelain figurine sculpted by artist Margi Wray. Introduced in September of 2009, the 8" tall open edition piece retailed for $125 (USD). Shoes and apple stem are made from pewter. Figure is still available for purchase.

WDCC Evil Queen and Raven Figurines, 2009

The Walt Disney Classics Collection two-piece set, "Now Begins Thy Magic Spell," featured the Evil Queen and her Raven. The porcelain figures were sculpted by artist Kent Melton. The queen stands 10" tall and wears a wire belt and pewter shoes. Also in pewter are the Raven's legs, the candle holder, and the handle on the large cup.

This set was part of the "Of Dreams and Magic Series" and was only available to WDCS members from January 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010. Retail price was $275 (USD).

1938 North American Handbill

It was during a recent attic clean-out of an old house in Pittsfield, New Hampshire that this 1938 Snow White handbill was discovered inside an old book. "Man, woman or child...it will amaze you, charm you, thrill you..."

The flyer was advertising the June 12-14 screenings of Snow White at the Scenic Theatre in Pittsfield. Four other films of the day are also mentioned...Wild Horse Rodeo, Midnight Intruder, Walking Down Broadway, and Penitentiary.

It was found in this envelope which was sent out by the Scenic Theatre. The delivery address is marked "Box Holder" so it was probably part of a mass promotional mailing for the film.

It's only been two days since we sat after hours in Projection Room #4 to witness the Dwarf story meeting. Yet tonight, here we are, at it again. This time, however, it's at one of the many Disney Studio night classes conducted by Don Graham. We'll "hear" animator Bill Tytla give a talk to those artists assigned to in-betweening and cleanup work.

The evening starts with the group watching a rough reel of the scene with the Dwarfs at the wash tub. Then Bill takes the stage. Now 75 years later to the day, here's Tytla's Action Analysis Class...

Snow White Window Cards

Window cards were movie posters designed to be placed in store windows and other locations around town. Because large numbers were needed, theater owners usually purchased them in bulk orders. The posters were produced on heavier card stock, but to keep costs down, a cheaper printing process was used. As a result, they tend to lack the luster found in one-sheets and other movie art.

The window cards came in one of three sizes with 14" x 22" tending to be the standard. There was also a midget (8" x 14") and a jumbo (22" x 28"). Across the top of the two smaller sizes was usually a blank border where theater owners would write information about dates and showtimes. Info via Learn About Movie Posters.
