Stage Magazine, February 1938

As Snow White hit theaters during its initial general release in February 1938, both newspapers and periodicals added voluminously to all the buzz surrounding the film. At a paper show last month, collector Rick Payne found this issue of Stage which features a Joe Grant drawing of Grumpy on the cover. It's a high-quality magazine, large format 12.75" x 9.75".

Description of the cover from index page...

A light overview of the film on page 13.

Plus a four-page uniquely-illustrated feature by Munro Leaf (author of "Ferdinand the Bull"). Caricatures by Abe Birnbaum (who also did campaign art for M-G-M). Both text and drawings are interestingly quirky and cute.

Images and info courtesy of the Rick Payne Collection via dadric's attic. Also thanks to William Stillman for add'l info and Greg Philip of A Lost Film for an add'l image.

The June 1938 edition of Stage Magazine included a tribute to Walt Disney for his success with Snow White (see earlier archive entry).

  1. Thank you very much for this article! I found this magazine almost 20 years ago, and framed it. It has a prominent spot in our living room. Of course, this means I haven't seen the inside for 20 years. It was great looking inside again!
