On the December 31, 1938 cover of
The Hollywood Reporter, our dwarf Happy makes an appearance along with a baby 'new year'...making for a Happy New Year. However, there was no accompanying Snow White article inside. This was the annual year-end issue for the trade newspaper, with holiday greetings and well-wishes taken out in full or half-page ads by Hollywood's elite.
Harry Sherman, producer of low-budget Westerns, probably paid the most
bucks to get his name on the cover. So why is Disney's jolliest dwarf there? Without a doubt, it's because no other 1938 film made a larger splash. It was
the year for
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and all of Hollywood knew it.
