1960s Seven Dwarfs Italian Xmas Comic

I Sette Nani e l'incantesimo di Natale (The Seven Dwarfs and the Christmas Spell) was a holiday-themed comic book issued in Italy on December 20, 1964. Published by Mondadori in the Albi della Rosa series, no. 528. Written by Gian Giacomo Dalmasso. Art by Giuseppe Perego. Total pages 52 (story 37). Price ₤50.

Synopsis: The Queen employs the help of the Seven Evil Dwarfs (yes, there are evil dwarfs in Italian comics). They go after Snow White's son (yes, she has a son; his name is Glauco and he first appeared in a 1939 comic, Biancaneve e il mago basilisco by Nino Pagot). They lure Glauco out of the castle where they transform him into a Christmas tree. The good Seven Dwarfs arrive on the scene. The evil ones try to do them in, along with Snow White, by causing an avalanche. The princess uses her body to protect the little Christmas tree. With this act of motherly love, her son's life is miraculously restored. The story ends when the Queen turns the Evil Dwarfs into crows. They then attack her.

The scene where Glauco is turned into a tree.

This story was actually a reprint of a comic that was published four years earlier in the December 1, 1960 issue of Walt Disney Almanacco Topolino (Mickey Mouse Almanac). Albi D'oro no. 48. Total pages 68 (story 28). Price ₤100.

The Seven Dwarfs (along with Thumper) appeared on another cover of Walt Disney Almanacco Topolino. January 1960, no. 37. They were not, however, included in the comic stories inside.

The cover artwork of the Seven Dwarfs with Thumper was traced from the original, which was first published in the US in the February 1958 issue of Silly Symphonies, Dell no. 8 (see earlier post).

1947 Seven Dwarfs and the Enchanted Mountain Comic

The Seven Dwarfs and the Enchanted Mountain was a 32-page full-color mini comic book issued in 1947. It was one of numerous General Mills mail-in cereal premiums. Kids could send in 10¢ and a box top from Cheerios, and in return they would receive four mini comic books. Newsprint paper stock. Measures approximately 7" x 3.25". Printed by Western Publishing (Whitman) of Racine, Wisconsin.

Loads of different mini comics were issued for the promotional campaign. Our Seven Dwarfs booklet is labeled Z-3 (third book in series Z). Story synopsis: A message from Snow White tells that the Prince has gone hunting on Emerald Mountain and has not returned. The Seven Dwarfs have several encounters with the Old Witch on their way to find him.

Sample pages.

Back cover.

Each lettered series consisted of four booklets. Series Z included Donald Duck, Pluto, Seven Dwarfs, and Mickey.

An original mailing envelope.

The dwarfs appeared on the back cover of some of the comics in the other series.

1947 newspaper advertisement.

General Mills would go on to have additional promotional campaigns involving mini comic books, but in this one from 1947, a total of 16 different booklets were available, four different series of four.

Snow White mini comics were used in giveaway campaigns for other corporations too:

Special thanks to 1937 Fan of Whistle While We Work for the heads-up on some of these.

1961 Seven Dwarfs with Pinocchio “Nosey Doings” Comic

The Seven Dwarfs with Pinocchio in "Nosey Doings" was a 16-page full-color mini comic book premium issued in New Zealand and Australia inside cereal boxes of Weeties and Kornies. Full color illustrations on newsprint paper stock. Measures approximately 7" x 3.5". Printed by Whitcombe and Tombs Ltd., New Zealand; © 1961 Walt Disney Productions.

This down under Weeties and Kornies promotional campaign began in 1950 with a series of eight sets of comic book giveaways (labeled A-H). Each of these sets consisted of eight individual mini comic books. So hearty breakfast eaters could actually collect a total of 64 different mini comic books, one at a time, with the purchase of their favorite cereal.

But wait, there's more. The campaign must have been quite successful because a second series of three sets (A-C) was issued in 1961. Each consisted of five individual mini comics for a total of 15. This is where our Seven Dwarfs with Pinocchio comes in. It is number C-2 in this second series.

On the back page of the comic book is an ad for the free giveaways. This one is for Weeties but the same comic could instead have an ad for Kornies.

Today, these mini comics can be hard to find.
