1975 "Snow White" Soundtrack Record Set from Australia

The Snow White soundtrack--starring Adriana Caselotti and the 1938 American movie cast--was released in Australia on a three-record boxed set. Unlike other soundtrack releases, this one contained the complete audio from the movie--with dialog, sound effects and all of the music (although not the missing lyrics such as in the Silly Song). Total run time about 85 minutes. Label: Buena Vista Records/Summit Records Australia. Catalog no. 102. Format: 33⅓ rpm, 12" vinyl. Black rainbow labels. Issued 1975.

The record sides were arranged for continuous play from one disc to the next.

This soundtrack boxed set was also released in the US. A two-record gatefold album was issued in Japan.

1938 "Weekly Illustrated"

The April 30, 1938 edition of the British Empire magazine, Weekly Illustrated, featured a two-page spread on the voice actors from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Australian cricket star Don Bradman is pictured on the cover along with several article headlines including "Snow White's Dwarfs are Real".

Other magazines of the day also features photo write-ups on the Snow White voice actors. Here's a few of them:

1961 Seven Dwarfs with Pinocchio “Nosey Doings” Comic

The Seven Dwarfs with Pinocchio in "Nosey Doings" was a 16-page full-color mini comic book premium issued in New Zealand and Australia inside cereal boxes of Weeties and Kornies. Full color illustrations on newsprint paper stock. Measures approximately 7" x 3.5". Printed by Whitcombe and Tombs Ltd., New Zealand; © 1961 Walt Disney Productions.

This down under Weeties and Kornies promotional campaign began in 1950 with a series of eight sets of comic book giveaways (labeled A-H). Each of these sets consisted of eight individual mini comic books. So hearty breakfast eaters could actually collect a total of 64 different mini comic books, one at a time, with the purchase of their favorite cereal.

But wait, there's more. The campaign must have been quite successful because a second series of three sets (A-C) was issued in 1961. Each consisted of five individual mini comics for a total of 15. This is where our Seven Dwarfs with Pinocchio comes in. It is number C-2 in this second series.

On the back page of the comic book is an ad for the free giveaways. This one is for Weeties but the same comic could instead have an ad for Kornies.

Today, these mini comics can be hard to find.

Faber-Castell 'Snow White' Erasers

A series of eight Snow White erasers produced by pencil manufacturer, Faber-Castell. Product no. D2454. Pictured in the original packaging. The individual price tag on one reads 29¢ (at Target). Others are marked 37¢ or 38¢ each. These examples were sold in Australia. Issued in the 1980s.

1966 Snow White Bank Book from Australia

The Bank of New South Wales in Australia issued a small series of themed savings account pass books, one of which featured Snow White and her forest friends on the cover.

The bank offered a bird book premium which included an ad for the four pass book choices. A Donald Duck cover was also available.

The publication of this edition of the bird book dated from 1966.

1938-39 Australian Catalog Ad

A 1938-39 catalog page for Hartleys Ltd., Australia's leading sports store. Several Snow White toys are mentioned and a set of felt dolls are pictured. A similar collection produced by Joy Toys is seen in an earlier post.

1938 New Screen News Magazine

A Tenggren-style Snow White and Seven Dwarfs were pictured on the cover of the August 27, 1938 edition of New Screen News magazine in Australia.

The "Our Cover" description lists Hoyts Plaza Theatre as the location of the Melbourne premiere.

1938 Photoplayer and Talkies Magazine

Tenggren's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs are pictured on the cover of the April 16, 1938 edition of the film fan magazine, The Photoplayer and Talkies. Published in Sydney, Australia. Original price 3 pence.

No mention is made of the Disney animated film inside the periodical.

Snow White Mystery Coin

I received an email back in March of 2013 from Australian collector Sheree Waddell. She had an inquiry about a coin that her friend had come across while working at a bank. About the size of an Australian 10¢ piece, it contains an image of Snow White along with a couple of bluebirds and flowers, and the rim is encircled with more tiny flowers. Yet, there are no other writings or identifying imprints. Both sides of the coin are identical.

In person, the coin looks silver rather than the bronze in the above photo. Some have suggested it might it be a theme park token, but those typically have the park logo stamped clearly on the face. Maybe it was a gift-with-purchase for some doll or collectible? I haven't been able to locate an answer.

In 2016, the coin showed up on ebay listings several different times. All of the sellers were located in Australia. Is this an Australian-produced item?

2001 Australian Doll Digest No. 87

A three-page Snow White article appeared in the Autumn 2001 issue (No. 87) of Australia's longest running premiere doll collecting magazine, Australian Doll Digest. The piece was written by the editor, Megan Carter.

Australian company Joy Toys produced these 1938 cloth dolls.

John Sands Pty. Ltd. of Sydney made many paper toy dolls.
