Snow White Nesting Doll Collections

Russian Snow White nesting dolls seen online in recent years. Made of wood, all are hand-painted. This first example was documented in 2010 by photographer Taryn Simon. Simon spent five days at JFK Airport cataloging over 1,000 contraband items--including this five-piece Snow White set (seen in her book, Contraband).

Snow White Squeeze-Toys from Russia

A vintage Snow White squeeze-toy set from Russia. Dates from about the end of Soviet-era. Made of rubber.

The figures lack any kind of manufacturer markings or Disney copyright imprint. It's probable these were produced without permission from the mothership.

Snow wears a red skirt. Happy holds a pipe. Dopey has large ears. Sneezy seems rather jolly.

Doc. Sleepy. Grumpy. Bashful.

The princess stands about 7" (180mm), the dwarfs 5.2" (130 mm).

The Russian Grumpy mold strongly resembles this 1992 Mattel figure, except for the movable arms.

And the face on the Russian Happy can be seen in this Doc.

The eight-piece set was seen online in April 2015 and is still available now. The seller is from the Ukraine. Special thanks to Dan Alexander Dizmentia for the heads-up on this one and to Maxime Lansmans for the Mattel comparisons.

Arithmetic Card Game from USSR

Printed in the former USSR, this children's math game dates from 1987. There are 44 cards and 22 images--each is divided between two cards. Players find the two parts of the picture, place them together, and add the total number of characters that appear in the whole image.

The illustrations were created by artist Vrublevskiy, and at first glance, they appear to be generic renderings of classic fairytales, nursery rhymes, and children's stories, including the Wizard of Oz, Three Little Pigs, and Pied Piper.

One image, however, stands out within the group. Rather than depicting Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in a nonspecific illustration, the artist instead chose to recreate the actual Disney characters, probably without official licensing.

Two cards placed together measure 5.3" x 3.7" (13.3 x 9.5cm). The correct sum for each pair is printed on the back side.

Special thanks to William Stillman for the heads-up on this one.

'Snow White' Movie Poster from Russia

Disney's Snow White screened in Russia back in 1955. The non-standardized character design seen on the movie poster is both interesting and refreshing. Measures 27" x 19". Folded format. "Белоснежка и семь гномов" (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs).

A news service photo from July 1955 was shot in Moscow and shows a Russian theater screening the film. The poster is seen in the left display window.

The "Wide World Photo" blurb on the back side, dated July 12, 1955, the movie was dubbed in French and subtitled in Russian. It goes on the say that the film was captured by the Russian army in Germany.
