1937-38 Guy Lombardo Snow White Record

In December 1937, Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians recorded a couple of Snow White singles a week before the motion picture had its world premiere. Whistle While You Work. Victor Records. Catalog no. 25736-B. Format: 78 rpm, 10" shellac disc. The number is a dance orchestra arrangements of the original Churchill/Morey song. Guy Lombardo's brother, Carmen, sings the vocals, and a multiple male vocal refrain accompanies him.

Another single, With a Smile and a Song was also released and again features the vocals of Carmen Lombardo. No. 25748-B.

The two numbers were issued in 1938 on the same disc in the United Kingdom. Label: His Master's Voice. No. B.D.5348.

The two Snow White songs would show up on later Guy Lombardo editions and compilations, including an RCA release in 1965 and a Pickwick in 1977.

1952 "Snow White" EP Record EYA-26 (Dennis Day)

In the previous Archive entries, we saw two Snow White story records by Dennis Day: Snow White and Sneezy and Snow White and Dopey. Each was released separately in 1952 on the RCA Victor label. Part of the Little Nipper Junior Series.

The two stories were also sold on one extended play record. Catalog no. EYA-26. Format: 45 rpm, 7" black vinyl disc. Yellow labels with red lettering.

1952 "Snow White and Dopey" Record WY-448 (Dennis Day)

Walt Disney's Snow White and Dopey as told by Dennis Day. Catalog no. WY-448. Issued in 1952. Format: 45 rpm, 7" yellow vinyl disc. Total run time approximately 8 minutes. Part of the Little Nipper Junior Series. The story is narrated by Dennis Day. Uncredited voice actors play the dwarfs, Snow White, the Queen, and Magic Mirror. Dopey is portrayed as simpleton, yet he does speak and even sings a song.

1952 "Snow White and Sneezy" Record WY-447 (Dennis Day)

In an earlier Archive entry, we saw the 1949 Snow White two-record story set narrated (and sung) by Dennis Day, with Ilene Woods as Snow White. It was part of the RCA/Victor Little Nipper Junior Series. In 1952, they released a couple of more stories.

RCA-Victor Disney Character Place Mat Sets

As part of an RCA promotional give-away in the early 1960s, two different sets of four Disney place mats were produced. Snow White was included in the first series along with Tinker Bell, Ludwig Von Drake, and the Sword and the Stone. Laminated card stock. Dimensions: approximately 17.5" x 11.5". Title logo in lower right corner.

The sets were sealed in clear plastic with the text, Compliments of Your RCA Victor Dealer.

A second collection of four from 1964 featured Pinocchio/Jimmy Cricket, Uncle Scrooge/Mary Poppins, Pluto/Figueroa, and Donald Duck/Mickey. Title logo in upper left corner.

Note that some printings included a small RCA logo above the place mat title. Other printings did not.

The place mats in this second series were still part of the free give-away, but consumers were also encouraged to send in a dollar--with the coupon below--which would buy you an additional set of four.

1938 British 'Snow White' 78 rpm Record Set

In January 1938, as many of us already know, the original Snow White movie soundtrack was released in the United States as a 78 rpm three-record set by RCA/Victor (see earlier post). The same American recordings were also issued in Great Britain but under the RCA subsidiary label of His Master's Voice (HMV), manufactured by the Gramophone Co, Ltd., Hayes, Middlesex, England.

The British album cover is made from a paperboard-like material. The front design features Snow and the boys in a variation of the Gustaf Tenggren's poster art (though the dwarfs, in particular, have been altered to appear more as they do in the film).

On the back cover, markings in the lower right corner indicate a print date of March 1938

The album opens up into a tri-fold design and on the inner flap is the Snow White story.

Fully open, we see more artwork on the three record sleeves.

The label artwork is much more colorful and interesting than in the US release.

Snow White premiered in London at the New Gallery theatre. On the rear cover of the theatre's program, we see an ad for the record set with prices and a release date of March 11, 1938, one day before the film's UK general release.
