Ideal Snow With Cloth Dolls

In the previous Archive entry, we saw the Snow White composition dolls manufactured by the Ideal Toy Company, circa 1937-38. Ideal also produced cloth counterparts during the same time period. Each was composed of a stuffed cloth body, an oilcloth head with hand-painted facial features, and wool hair. Snow White measures 16" and came in either a blue and white dress or red and white. Both included a dwarf silkscreen print on the skirt.

Original Ideal tag.

Snow is listed in both the 3rd and 4th editions of 200 Years of Dolls: Identification and Price Guide by Dawn Herlocher.

Red dress version.

A full set of Seven Dwarfs was also created. Wool beards (except Dopey) and felt hats. Clothing colors varied. At approximately 11" or 12" tall, they paired well with the 16" Snow White doll.

A Dopey doll is found on page 849 of Hake's Official Price Guide to Disney Collectibles, 2nd edition, 2007. It's listed at 15" high, but this measurement might include to the tip of his outstretched hat. Cloth and composite dolls by Ideal are also shown in the 1974 book, Disneyana by Munsey, p.61. It states that the original retail price of each dwarf was $2. This collaborates with the catalog listing we saw in the next post.

This Dopey is a whistling version. When bellows in legs are pressed, a one note whistle can be heard. Measures approximately 12". Original belt with small lantern and nickeled shovel accessory. Manufacturer's box.
