The Story of Dopey Book

Front Cover

Here's a look at The Story of Dopey book, one of eight titles published by Whitman (1938) in the "Story of" series. It's worth noting that this tale takes place after the movie and refers to Snow White as living happily with the Prince "in their Land of Dreams."

The Snow White "Story of" Books

Front Cover of the Snow White Edition

The "Story of" series of Snow White books were produced in 1938 by Whitman Publishing Company. Sold as a boxed set of eight, each illustrated story book was devoted to one character (the Princess and the individual Dwarfs). Printed on an inexpensive pulp stock with somewhat heavier stock covers, they were designed to be read and colored by younger readers. Each title measures 7.5" x 11" and contains 24 pages.

Each of the books were numbered 1044, and the set came housed together in an illustrated box.

Orson Welles 'Snow White' Radio Performance, 1945

A studio audience admission ticket for this live CBS performance...

Sixty Seven years ago tonight, Cresta Blanca Wines sponsored a CBS radio dramatization of Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The live broadcast took place at the Columbia Square Playhouse in Hollywood and aired on the program, "THIS IS MY BEST", a series hosted by Orson Welles.

In the introduction to the show, Welles shares that it's his oldest daughter's seventh birthday and that he knows of no better story to share with her than Snow White. As one would expect, his narration is rock solid. Jane Powell, who starred in the 1944 Screen Guild Theater performance, repeats her role as the princess. A full cast of Queen/Witch, Prince and Dwarfs fills out the presentation. Excerpts of the songs from the film are performed throughout with live orchestra accompaniment.

Original Airdate: March 27, 1945...

Snow White's 75th Anniversary Hollywood Screening

Recently, it was announced that the TCM (Turner Classic Movies) Classic Film Festival along with the D23 Disney Fan Club will present a 75th anniversary big screen showing of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The public screening will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday April 14, 2012 at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

In addition, on the day before, legendary actor Kirk Douglas will be on hand at the theatre for the first public screening of the newly restored 1954 Disney film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. That will be Friday April 13th at 2:45 pm.

The four-day festival runs April 12-15 and will play a wide variety of motion picture gems as they were originally meant to be seen--on the big screen, in some of the world's most iconic venues, with the people who made them. For the classic film lover, this looks to be quite the prodigious weekend.
