1938 Grosset & Dunlap "From Famous Picture" Book

In 1937, New York book publisher Grosset & Dunlap produced The Complete Story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (see earlier Archive entry). However, this didn't prevent them from releasing a second title in 1938 to capitalize on the massive success of the movie.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: From the Famous Picture by Walt Disney, a 38 page book that includes color illustrations by Gustaf Tenggren, as well as B+W images from the film.

On the title page, it reads, "illustrated by Walt Disney." That's cute. :)

The vast majority of text for this book comes directly from the Good Housekeeping serial which was written by Dorothy Ann Blank (a member of the Disney story team for the film). It was originally published in the November and December 1937 issues of the periodical. It's not the complete magazine story but rather large excerpts, with a word or phrase changed here or there.

The hardcover came with a dust jacket which displayed the same art as found on the covers.

Special thanks to the Michael Filippello Collection for sharing these images with us.

  1. I have a copy of this book, it was one of the first examples of Disneyana that I ever acquired. Found it in an antiques store in Wisconsin. It could be in better shape, but I still love it.

  2. I have one of these books too - I find the floral pattern on the cover interesting. Thanks for posting more about this book!
